Ford's Ohio Assembly Plant (formerly
Ohio Truck Plant) was opened in September, 1973. The original
members of this plant (from Lorain Local UAW 425) were responsible
for building and painting the body of the Econoline Van, which were
then transported to by truck to Lorain Assembly Plant for final
assembly.In 1976 members voted to become a
separate Local Union and United Auto Workers Local 2000 was
Chartered on August 4, 1976.
Our Local Retirees were Chartered on
July 22, 1983 and presently have 675 members, many of which have
remained very active in the community.
In 1988 Ford Motor Company and Nissan
Motors announced an association to design, engineer and build a
front-wheel drive min-van, which became the Mercury Villager and
Nissan Quest. With this new product Ford wanted a separate unit to
work under the TEAM Concept or M.O.A. (Modern Operating Agreement).
Local Leadership responded by collectively bargaining an agreement
which helped pave the way for an additional 1,800 members to become
a part of our local. Many of the principals in the M.O.A., which
were groundbreaking at the time, have been incorporated throughout
Ford Motor Company.
Our original Local Union Office was
located in the Smith Building, 228 Miller Road, Avon Lake Ohio. In
December of 1978 the Local bought a house on 588 Moore Road and it
was converted into office and officially moved in on February, 1979.
This building was named Ken Bannon Hall in honor of the beloved
National Ford Director, Brother Ken Bannon. Many of the membership
meetings at this time took place either at a conference hall at Aqua
Marine Resort, or Troy Middle School in Avon Lake. In 1993 a
proposal was passed by the membership to build a new local union
hall. The land was purchased on a lot located on the corner of Abbe,
and French Creek Road in December 1993. Groundbreaking ceremonies
took place on May 18, 1996 and construction of our present hall was
completed in December 1996. In January 2001 the local purchased 5
acres of land adjoining the hall.
